As attested to by the eye witnesses, it was a chaotic scenario with destruction. Lars Frohmüller is the German public broadcaster MDR correspondent who remembered that; “We saw blood on the floor, we saw people sitting beside each other. and we saw many doctors trying to keep people warm and help them with their injuries.”

The motive behind the attack is being investigated. Ironically, the accused had put up anti-Islamic views and criticism of the German government on social media, raising question marks over his motive. The authorities are taking all possible angles into account to determine the correct motivation.

This incident has once again brought back memories of the 2016 Berlin Christmas market attack where an extremist ran over 12 people to death in a truck. As a precaution, several towns have now decided to cancel their Christmas markets in light of the latest tragedy.

The Magdeburg Christmas market, which annually attracts and is visited by so many people, has been closed until further notice. Security measures at other Christmas markets across Germany are now being reviewed to avoid a repeat of such an incident in the future.

Shocked and grieving, residents have demanded that there be vigils for the victims and support services for the survivors. The community came together in this time of need to show solidarity and support.

Be on guard all times during investigation and gathering information, and report even an itty-bitty suspicious activity or happening. Emergency hotlines for gathering details about love ones that may have been within the market during the raid attack are set.

It is clear that any administration finds it very difficult to ensure public safety when mass gatherings are at the core. The German government reassured citizens by reaffirming protection to its people through higher security measures and better investigation mechanisms.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, unity in adversity is now being emphasized more within community resilience. While the nation mourns, moves are underway to assist victims’ families and further step up security measures in the public domain during this time of the year and way beyond.
